Mannar is known for its winds, vast coastal landscapes, wetlands and rich biodiversity. Today, its landscape is increasingly dotted with wind turbines as Sri Lanka expands renewable energy generation.

Wind power is an important part of moving towards a cleaner energy future. But the question we need to ask is: where are we placing these developments, and what could be the environmental cost?

Mannar is an important area for migratory and resident birds, including species that use the surrounding wetlands and coastal habitats. Concerns have been raised about potential impacts from turbines, transmission infrastructure, habitat disturbance and bird collisions.

The conversation shouldn't simply be renewable energy vs. conservation. It should be about finding ways to develop renewable energy without compromising ecologically important landscapes and wildlife.

The recent weather and rough seas have once again brought tiny plastic pellets – nurdles – back onto parts of Sri Lanka’s coastline.

To the untrained eye, these small, lentil-sized pellets may look harmless. But nurdles are a serious form of plastic pollution. They can persist in the marine environment, become buried in beach sand, break down into smaller microplastics, and be mistaken for food by marine life.

For Sri Lanka, this is not a new problem. Years after the MV X-Press Pearl disaster, nurdles continue to be found along our shores. Recent research has shown that weathering is changing these pellets over time and contributing to their gradual breakdown into smaller plastic particles.

And now, with changing sea conditions, waves and currents, material that has remained offshore or buried along our coastline can be redistributed and deposited once again on our beaches.
